Regular Course Information

The Korean language course at Kyungwoon University's Korean Language Education Center is divided into <Beginner 1, 2>, <Intermediate 1, 2>, and <Advanced 1, 2> based on the results of the student's Korean proficiency test. Each course runs on a schedule of 5 days per week for ten weeks. Starting from the beginner's class and progressing to the advanced class, the total duration of education is one year and six months. However, after completing the 1-year intermediate course, students can acquire sufficient communication skills.

※ Apart from Korean language lessons, students can also experience various aspects of Korean culture tailored to their requirements. Programs such as learning Korean cooking, visits to historical sites or palaces, pottery experiences, and other cultural activities that students might find interesting are offered. Separate participation fees may apply.

  • A semester consists of 10 weeks, totaling 200 hours of lessons.
  • Classes run from Monday to Friday, 4 hours each day.
  • Each class comprises around 20 students.
  • Students can participate in various cultural experiences and elective classes.
  • The morning session runs from 9 AM to 1 PM.

  • The afternoon session operates with the same program as the morning session.

Beginner Course

  • Understand the spelling and sounds of Hangul syllables.
  • Learn the pronunciation of Korean characters (Hangul) for accurate reading.
  • Grasp the basic structure of Korean to comprehend and use short sentences.
  • Develop basic communication skills necessary for daily life.
Class Content
  • Basic vocabulary, understanding primary particles and verb endings, tenses, understanding basic sentence structures.
  • Greetings, self-introduction, ordering food, buying items, making phone calls, using public transportation, utilizing banks, and other everyday Korean language skills.
  • Understanding fundamental Korean culture necessary for daily life, such as dining and making phone calls.
Beginner Course 2 (TOPIK Level 2) Educational Objectives
  • Target adults who have received 200 hours of Korean education or have equivalent Korean proficiency, to nurture basic communication skills necessary for daily life.
  • Familiarize with the phonetic rules of Hangul for more natural reading and speaking.
  • Understand and utilize extended sentences made of short connected phrases.
Class Content
  • Ask and answer familiar topics like family, hobbies, sports, seasons, travel, and experiences.
  • Learn speech levels like informal and honorifics, indirect expressions to communicate appropriately according to the situation.
  • Understand Korean culture through experiences like Lunar New Year's foods and traditional games.

Intermediate Course

Intermediate Course 1 (TOPIK Level 3) Educational Objectives
  • This program is designed for adults with 400 hours of Korean language education or equivalent Korean proficiency. The goal is to cultivate the communication skills necessary for routine social activities and to expose students to Korean culture.
  • Learners can converse about their interests and enhance their capabilities to handle partial tasks.
  • They can freely converse in daily situations by learning sufficient daily vocabulary, Sino-Korean words, and idiomatic expressions.
Class Content
  • Expressions using various auxiliary particles, verb endings, and other elements of the Korean grammar.
  • Expressing on diverse topics such as finding a room, moving, getting a TV repaired, planning a holiday, using a park, traveling, acting, etc.
  • Understanding Korean culture through activities like Korean cooking practice, cultural facility tours, and poetry appreciation.
Intermediate Course 2 (TOPIK Level 4) Educational Objectives
  • This course targets adult learners with 600 hours of Korean language education or equivalent Korean proficiency. The goal is to cultivate the communication skills necessary for routine social activities and to expose them to Korean traditional culture.
  • To enhance the language skills needed for academics and professional activities.
  • To develop the ability to logically express your thoughts for relatively long time.
  • Broaden understanding of Korean society and culture in general
Class Content
  • Learning expressions for requests, counseling, appointments, frequently used abstract words, and idiomatic expressions.
  • Reading and discussing writings on topics like society, culture, history, novels, etc.
  • Go on a field trip or learn Korean myths, traditional fairy tales, and traditional songs to understand Korean culture

Advanced Course

  • This program is designed for adults who have received 800 hours of Korean language instruction or have equivalent proficiency in Korean. It aims to equip them with the ability to communicate effortlessly in their language activities and to provide them with a broad understanding of Korea's history and culture.
  • The course enhances their ability to address abstract and topical issues.
  • It further boosts their communication skills on various topics and fosters their capability to handle comprehensive tasks.
Class Content
  • Various debate lessons on topics of politics, society, economy, and culture
  • Exploring professional knowledge and discussions through research on various topics and presentations in a thesis format
  • Learning precise language expressions suitable for different speaking situations
Advanced 2 (TOPIK Level 6) Educational Objectives
  • This program is designed for adults who have received 1,000 hours of Korean language instruction or have equivalent proficiency in Korean. It aims to enable them to use Korean for societal interactions fluently and to equip them with an in-depth understanding of Korea's history and culture.
  • The course encourages a concrete understanding of Korean society through various mediums like newspapers, TV, news, and literary works.
  • It also cultivates the ability to logically express one's opinions in formal situations such as university lectures, discussions, and presentations.
Class Content
  • Practice listening/reading/discussing using actual materials such as newspapers and broadcasts.
  • Learn about Korean history using documentary programs, etc.
  • Comprehensive language training through newspaper making, internet information searching, posting writings, etc.
  • Understand and communicate on prominent social issues and cultural activities through various articles and literature.

Expert Course

Expert Course - Expert Course 1 (TOPIK 6 and above)
Expert Course 1 (TOPIK 6 and above) Educational Objectives
  • This program is designed for adults who have completed 1,200 hours of Korean language education (equivalent to level 6 or higher in the standard curriculum) or have equivalent proficiency in Korean. It aims to equip them with the Korean language skills necessary for academic endeavors and employment and to broaden their understanding of Korean society and culture.
  • The program enhances language skills needed for university and graduate courses as well as professional success.
  • Learners can also improve their report writing skills and various writing forms necessary for university and graduate school courses.
Class Content
  • Use books, theses, the internet, etc., to find materials needed for academic assignments.
  • Understand the cultural background necessary for work life and learn related Korean expressions.
  • Understand entire texts critically through diverse reading and express opinions and discussions on them.
  • Understand and practice expressing opinions fluently and accurately on major social issues covered in newspapers and broadcast materials.

Liberal Arts Korean Guide

Liberal Arts Korean Guide

  • New and transfer international students must have at least a Level 3 on the Korean Proficiency Test (TOPIK) for admission, and at least a Level 4 for graduation.
  • From the first semester after admission until the second semester, international students must prioritize and intensively enroll in Korean courses (Liberal Arts Korean) offered by the Free Major - Korean Language Education Center, organized by levels and phases.
  • The teaching method integrates 'Vocabulary·Grammar → Speaking/Listening → Reading → Writing'.
  • Organized by level, it enhances the fluency and accuracy of the Korean language to facilitate enrollment in major courses.
  • It's designed with an excellent teaching staff so international students can take major and liberal arts courses alongside Korean students without inconvenience.

TOPIK

Kyungwoon TOPIK Center

  • By repeatedly taking mock exams tailored to the TOPIK format, you can relieve test-related stress and become familiar with overall test-taking strategies.
  • Examination location: Building 2, Room 211 (Kyungwoon Mock TOPIK)
  • Registration office: Institute of International Affairs (Building 2, Room 211)
  • In charge: Institute of International Affairs (Contact: 054-479-1316)
  • Each semester, a preparation class for the TOPIK is operated for those who have not acquired Level 3, and mock TOPIK tests are conducted.
  • Under the supervision of the head professor of the Korean Language Education Center, the Kyungwoon TOPIK Center analyzes past Korean proficiency test questions to identify question trends and predict potential questions.
  • The test results are announced on the Kyungwoon TOPIK Center bulletin board after the exam, and detailed analysis of the results is provided individually.
  • Candidate for Selection: International students currently enrolled at Kyungwoon University who wish to acquire the certified TOPIK Level 3
